Top 5 Dog Friendly Activities in Asheville

Asheville is one of the most dog-centric towns in America. Naturally then, with spring just around the corner, we’re thinking about all the wonderful warm-weather adventures we plan on having with our pups in the coming weeks. For those traveling to the area with their best friend, we put together this short list of our favorite Fido-friendly activities!

 1. A Walk in the Woods

We have thousands of trails to choose from here in the Blue Ridge Mountains. With that many options, all ranging in difficulty, there is absolutely a trail for everyone. Bent Creek is a great option that is super close to town and very well-visited. While dogs do have to stay on leash in the park, there will be so much for them to see, smell and explore they’ll hardly notice. Or, for an awesome day trip, travel over to Brevard and choose from any one of dozens of waterfall-centered hikes.

2. Sit out on the Patio

So many of our local establishments are dog friendly, it’s impossible to call them all out. A walk through the city will uncover dozens of options for you and your four legged best friend – each one interesting and full of personality. The Wedge is a personal favorite – the outdoor seating area hosts plenty of other friendly dogs just dying to meet you and yours and they brew a delicious beverage!  Asheville Brewing Company is another great option – their full service patio is a hot spot for pup activity!

3. An Evening Out

I love a good evening in with my sweet pup but every now and then I like to take her with me on an evening out. The Bywater is an awesome place for the two of us to go as they light a big bonfire behind the building on chilly weekend nights. She mingles with the other dogs, I warm my fingers by the blazing fire, we both enjoy the party. A total win-win!

4. Make it a Play Date!

Technically the whole city is one giant play date for your canine companion – on any given day he or she may meet a new best friend right in the heart of downtown. But for an off-leash experience where your pup can really let loose and have some fun, stop by one of Asheville’s Off Leash Dog Parks!  Azalea Park Dog Park is a 155-acre park with 4 soccer fields and two separate fenced in areas for our four legged friends – one for bigger dogs, one for smaller. Another option is the French Broad River Park, located in the River Arts District. French Broad River Park is a gorgeous park situated along the meandering French Broad River and boasting paved trails carved through vast swathes of green. The fenced-in off-leash section of the park is a full acre with two separate areas – one for the big guys and one for the little guys.

5.  Adopt a Home Away From Home

Carolina Mornings has dozens of dog-friendly rentals – each one as beautiful as the last. Travel in style and stay at any one of the amazing cabins, condos, lodges or cottages. Check out Truly Breathless for an amazing 3 bedroom lodge that’s still a convenient distance from the city! The views will – as the name implies – truly take your breath away. For a smaller, more rustic but just as gorgeous cabin, we have Rainbow Ridge.  Just minutes from the Biltmore Estate and Downtown Asheville, this cabin is a perfect choice for those of you who want it all.
