History of July 4th

The fourth of July is one of the best holiday's during the summer for families to reunite with loved ones and celebrate the Independence of the United States. Since our founding fathers declared us independent from Great Britain in 1776, every fourth of July, we come together and celebrate with BBQs, games, parades, fireworks, and so much more, just as John Adams, one of our founding father's said to! Following the War of 1812 when Great Britain attacked us once again, only to be defeated for the second time, did the patriotic celebration become more widespread! Offically on July 4th, 1870, the Fourth of July was recognized as a federal holiday. Since July 4th falls in the middle of summer, it is a large focus for families to come together and be involved with BBQs, activities, and to end the nightly celebration with fireworks! Listed below are a few of our favorite July 4th celebrations that we want you to be a part of this Independence Day!

 Downtown Asheville Celebration
Beginning at 2:00 PM in Downtown Asheville at Pack Square Park, the Ingles Independence Day Celebration returns for another year of family-friendly fun! Bring the kids to this super fun event - bouncy houses, Splashville Fountain, and other activities will keep them engaged, while the live music and local, craft food and drinks will entertain the adults. Fireworks begin around 9:30 PM, so bring a chair or a blanket and settle in for a great show!

Black Mountain Fireworks Hike
The Black Mountain Fireworks Hike is the perfect combination of two of our favorite summer things: firework displays and summit hikes! Put on by the Swannanoa Valley Museum, this event begins at 6:00 PM. The museum brings the chairs up to the mountains while you enjoy a moderate 45-minute hike to the top. Once at the peak, an old-fashioned watermelon cutting commences! To register, call (828) 669-9566.

South Asheville Fireworks
The fireworks show at Lake Julian is beloved by locals and visitors alike! Beginning at 9:30 p.m. on the 4th, this event always promises a good time. Be sure to come early, as it is quite popular - the best spots along the lake fill up quickly. We love spending the entire afternoon at the park, enjoying the grills, volleyball court, horseshoe pits, and more!

Fireworks in Hendersonville
Hendersonville takes its Fourth of July celebration just as seriously as its neighbors. Swing by downtown for the Music on Main 4th of July Celebration Concert for live music beginning at 6 p.m., and cheer on our veterans at a recognition ceremony during the concert. Stay until the sun sets for Hendersonville's fireworks display at 9:30 p.m.

Fireworks in Lake Junaluska
There's no shortage of Independence Day fun in Lake Junaluska, where the party starts on July 3 and lasts through July 7. Jam out to the Blue Ridge Big Band at 7:30 p.m. July 3, then set your alarm for 11 a.m. July 4th to catch the annual Fourth of July Parade! Follow the parade to a family-friendly BBQ picnic ($10/ adult and $5/kid), complete with face-painting, music and bounce houses. Finish out your patriotic day admiring a beautiful fireworks show over the lake.
