Water Sports in the Mountains

Water Sports in the Mountains
Yes, we're known for our beer, our hikes, our dog friendly culture, our art, our food... but did you know that Asheville is a fantastic place to partake in the best of the best of water sports? Paddling is enormously popular in Western North Carolina - in part because we have the French Broad River and its many tributaries as our natural playground, but also because our surrounding landscape is just so breathtakingly gorgeous! Paddling on the lakes is just as relaxing as a massage, and we want you to experience the fun! Read on for a brief introduction to some of our favorite water sports and where to enjoy them.

Lake Lure
Lake Lure is a 720 acre water feature with over 21 miles of shoreline! Located in the heart of Hickory Nut Gorge, Lake Lure is the product of crystal clear run off from the Rocky Broad River. A fantastic spot for hiking, bird watching, fishing, rock climbing, swimming, and paddling, Lake Lure is an excellent and well loved area resource. A number of boat rental companies operate in the area, so head that way to paddle board, kayak, canoe, or sail!

Lake Julian
Lake Julian offers locals and visitors alike a wide variety of activities to enjoy! Open May through August from 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM, one can spend hours and hours enjoying the beautiful scenery and rented equipment available to them. Paddle Boats, Canoes, and Fishing Boats are available to rent and Fishing Permits are available for purchase for ages 16 and up.

Lake Powhatan
Lake Powhatan is conveniently situated just minutes from Downtown Asheville and it definitely has something for everyone! The campground is quite large and situated in a heavily wooded area at an elevation of 2,200 feet. The surrounding trails lead to mile high peaks, waterfalls, and thickly wooded slopes. The lake has a sandy swimming beach - perfect for a cool off after a strenuous hike - and anglers are welcome to fish the waters.
