An August Event: The Dirty Dancing Festival

The Dirty Dancing Festival Approaches!
Fans of the cult-classic film Dirty Dancing know that the stunning landscape of Lake Lure and Chimney Rock are at the heart of the movie. Every year, those communities put on a fantastic festival celebrating the movie, the area, and the people that continue to make it special. This year, over the weekend of August 19th - 20th, locals and visitors alike can participate in all the scheduled fun! Read on for more information about this super fun festival!
Where Is It?
The Dirty Dancing Festival takes place at Lake Lure - the original setting for the famous flick. BBC News once named it as the #1 Most Watched Film by Women and it continues to be one of the most popular of American Cult Classics! Lake Lure, for its part, was named by National Geographic as one of the 10 most beautiful man made lakes in the country. Combine these two claims to fame and you come away with one of the best foundations for a festival! Lake Lure is located just a short drive from Downtown Asheville (less than 30 miles), and is nestled in the Hickory Nut Gorge. In the summer, the lake is surrounded by lush foliage and the mountains rising in the distance lend an awe to the already spectacular sight.

What to Expect
This festival has been an annual expectation for years now, and every year it just gets better and better. Live music, competitions, games, local food and beer, crafts for the kids, and - of course - dancing lessons form the crux of this beloved event. One of our favorite events is the "Lake Lift" - participants relive that classic moment in the film when the late, great Patrick Swayze (Johnny Castle) lifts Jennifer Grey (Baby Houseman) into the air as the culmination of their famous performance. Adults looking to attend can purchase tickets in advance for just $20, and on the day of for $25. Tickets for children 12 and under are advance priced at $5, and go up to $10 on the day of. As a tribute to the film's star, Patrick Swayze, the Dirty Dancing Festival benefits the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.
