The Annual WNC Farm Tour

The Annual WNC Farm Tour
Western North Carolina is a fresh-food haven primarily because our farmers make is so that our agricultural life is still thriving. The farmers spread across our corner of the state provide delicious, nutritious food for our restaurants and our homes, and for that we owe them an awful lot of thanks! Every year, the Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project (ASAP) puts together a Farm Tour so that the community can directly communicate with these farms. This year, the tour is scheduled for the weekend of June 25th and more than three dozen farms will be featured. This is a great opportunity to become better acquainted with the beautiful people and properties that produce your food, so read on for more information about this fantastic event!
What it is:
Most of the farms on the tour are not typically open to the public because, well, they're working farms! But over this one weekend, all of the farms in the ASAP program open their homes and fields to visitors looking to learn a bit more about how food is planted, grown, harvested, and transported to the homes that make up our communities. The farms themselves range from century farms to urban gardens to certified organic operations and no two farms are exactly alike. You'll be introduced to the plants, the animals, and the people that work to make all of this happen.
How to do it:
This is a self-guided tour, so if you would prefer to only visit farms located in a specific county, go right ahead! Each farm will be open from 12 Noon to 5:00 PM on both Saturday and Sunday and one pass (purchased in advance for $30 or the day of the tour for $40) admits an entire carload of people! Tickets can be purchased at the ASAP website, tailgate markets, or at select area businesses. Farm Tour Guides are available online and from pass vendors - they include a helpful map, directions to each farm, and some tips for how to fully enjoy this once-a-year event.
Staying Local:
Staying local is key to enjoying the full breadth of this event. Waking up in a comfortable home away from home - and returning at the end of the day with a basket full of fresh produce - will bring your weekend getaway to the next level of perfect!
