Labor Day Weekend in Asheville, NC: Part I
Holiday weekends are some of the best times to visit our small but vibrant mountain community. We love a good party, and holiday weekends are the perfect time to throw a get-together. There are so many activities from which to choose in these mountains, and we know that it can be difficult to fit it all in to just one weekend. To help you plan the perfect extended weekend getaway, we've outlined a few of our favorite holiday weekend activities below!
Take a Hike
Some of the best hiking in the country can be found in Western North Carolina, no matter the season. Labor Day Weekend is a great time to get out there and enjoy nature, not only because the temperature is moderate and the breeze begins to cool down, but also because the landscape begins to change in early Autumn. Some of the leaves get an orange tint, the sunsets paint bold colors against the sky, and wild blueberries are ripe for the picking. There are hundreds of hikes from which to choose, and your choice will ultimately depend on your personal aesthetic. We recommend check out our Carolina Mornings Area Guides, located under the Activity Tab on our website, for more information about some of our favorite area hikes!
Have a Picnic
If you haven't noticed from previous blog posts, we LOVE picnics! A picnic is such a delightful afternoon activity during the warm seasons and we jump on any opportunity to spread a blanket, crack a book, and nibble on local delicacies. The NC Arboretum has a wealth of perfect picnic spots, as does the Biltmore Estate! During that first week of September, when Labor Day gives us ample opportunities to relax, the autumn flowers at the Biltmore Estate are in full bloom. Late flowering rose bushes, azalea, mums, and crepe myrtle are all at their peak and the air is alive with the scent of early fall. Have a picnic along the banks of the French Broad River, or just off one of the paths in the expansive gardens!
Tour a Winery
Western North Carolina gets a lot of attention for its craft beer, but our corner of the state is also home to several fantastic wineries. What better way to spend the holiday weekend than surrounded by the stunning Blue Ridge Mountains, sipping a glass of local wine, and enjoying live music? A great way to experience multiple wineries in one weekend is to drive the Catawba Valley Wine Trail! you'll get to explore 4 fantastic wineries, all just a short drive from Asheville, off of I-40.
Stay in Style
Staying in a Carolina Mornings home over Labor Day Weekend will bring your holiday to the next level of fun. With dozens of homes from which to choose - each one uniquely built and decorated - your party's home base is just waiting to be discovered! For a comfortable, spacious 3 bedroom home located in Hendersonville (just a short drive to Asheville, and a dreamy mountain town in and of itself), check out Forest Hill! Distant mountain views lend a peaceful energy to the home, and the outdoor entertaining area is perfect for an evening cookout!
