Lake Lure: The Perfect Day Trip
A Day at the Lake
There are so many possibilities for locals and visitors looking for day trips from Asheville and the surrounding towns - so many, in fact, that to choose just one can be a truly difficult decision! This week, the Carolina Mornings Team is all aflutter with the warm weather and our minds are focused on water. Naturally, then, we're thinking about Lake Lure.
Completed in 1927 by Dr Lucius Morse (the very same man who turned Chimney Rock into the attraction that we now know it to be) in partnership with his two brothers, Lake Lure has – as its name indicates – an alluring beauty to it. Indeed, it has such an attractive landscape that several films have used the Lake as a filming location – the most famous of which is Dirty Dancing. Today, visitors to Lake Lure can expect jam-packed days of fun, rain or shine. From mountain biking to romantic strolls, from lake cruises to picnics in the sand, Lake Lure has it all.
Activities for All
Lake Lure sees thousands of visitors year round. Though there are dozens of activities worth your time and attention, we've highlighted a few that we particularly enjoy:
Owned and operated by the town of Lake Lure, the beach is open seven days a week from 10 AM – 6 PM, with extended hours over holiday weekends. Visitors can swim, nap, play, have a picnic and just genuinely breathe easy in this gorgeous location. Plus, kids under 4 get a free pass!
We’ve written before about the high-intensity sports that we, the Carolina Mornings Team, love to do, so it should come as no surprise that some of our favorite things to do over at Lake Lure pack quite the punch of adrenalin. The Lake Lure Adventure Company offers waterskiing, wakeboarding, surfing, guided fishing trips, eco-kayaking tours and boat rentals. In other words, all the ingredients for an awesome day!
Ahh, the peace and tranquility found only in the middle of an enormous lake. We love Lake Lure Boat Tours because they offer such a wide variety of different tours from which to choose. Try the sunset cruise – it will take your breath away!
End the Day in Luxury
The best way to end a day of vacation is to retire to a Carolina Mornings Property. The luxury, the comfort, the convenience – the experience is truly the epitome of relaxation. Cabin on the Rocks, a 2-bedroom cabin located in Chimney Rock, is a nearby option that is just perfect for a back-to-nature trip with a modern twist! Featuring a private hot tub, an outdoor entertaining area with fire pit, and the refreshing sound of the Rocky Broad River rushing right outside the door, Cabin on the Rocks is a cozy cabin that has it all. For larger groups, Peaceful Mountain Retreat, one of our newest properties, is a three bedroom cabin located in surrounding Asheville which boasts its own orchard of wild fruit – depending on the season, guests will enjoy wild strawberries, wild blackberries, wineberries, and apples. With 25-acres of surrounding forest, the privacy and serenity that comes with staying here is unbeatable.
