Carolina Mornings Spotlight: Hooker Falls

Enjoying Spring and Summer in the Mountains:
Spring and Summer in the mountains of Western North Carolina means hot sun, lush foliage, and swimming in the lakes and streams that dot our landscape. With hundreds of miles of National and State forests, the opportunities for water-based adventures are limitless. To help you plan your warm-weather fun, we've put a spotlight on one of our absolute favorite swimming holes in the area!
Hooker Falls is one of our favorite summer hang out spots. A relatively small waterfall (about 12 feet), the real draw of Hooker Falls is the wide and deep pool at the base of the falls. During the spring season, the water is ice cold and perfect for splashing after a vigorous hike in the area. Large rocks surround the pool, making it a great place to just lay in the sun, have a picnic, read a book, or do any of your other favorite down-time activities.
During the summer season, when the southern sun is at its hottest, the water warms up and this becomes a very popular swimming hole for visitors and locals alike. Hooker Falls is the only waterfall in the DuPont State Forest that is considered safe for swimming; the calm pool of water has a gentle current that, we find, lulls us into a feeling of deep serenity. And for those that want to make more of a sport out of it, consider kayaking up the stream from Cascade Lake... and plunging over the falls!
To get to Hooker Falls from Downtown Asheville, take I-26 East to Exit 40 for Highway 280. Turn Right onto 280 and drive about 16 miles. As you enter Brevard and drive past the Wal-Mart, make a Left onto US 64. Continue on this road for 3.7 miles until you reach the gas station in Penrose. Turn Right onto Crab Creek Road. After 4.3 miles, turn right onto DuPont Road. 3.1 miles ahead, you'll find the Hooker Falls Parking area on the Right. A 1/4 mile trail will lead you to the falls!
