Embracing the Rain in the Blue Ridge Mountains

Rainy Day Activities in Asheville, NC

The rainy season is soon to be upon us, but in no way does that minimize the beauty of Western North Carolina. Indeed, some would even say that our misty mornings and rainy afternoons are our bounty - that the rain grants us those hot pink and orange streaks in the sky as the sun sets over the mountains - that they are the prize that we are given for choosing this beautiful place as our home. That is not to say, however, that we are immune to the rainy day blues – every now and then they do set in, so for all of us, travelers and locals alike, we've put together this list of our favorite rainy day activities!

1.  Tour the Local Art Scene!

Asheville is a hotbed of artistic talent and the galleries in the area are here to prove it! For some uniquely Appalachian art, the Folk Art Center, located on the Blue Ridge Parkway, is an excellent spot. For a more city experience, Woolworth Gallery and Kress Emporium have dozens of local artists showcased. And of course, with the River Arts District as an option, no art lover will go hungry!

2.  Go Climbing!

Even though it’s raining outside, Asheville still maintains the ability to satisfy the athlete in all of us! We have an absolutely amazing indoor climbing gym located in the heart of Downtown on Wall Street. With courses designed for the beginners, the intermediate, and the pros, there is always something for everyone.

3.  Taste the Local Brews

Perhaps it all stems back to the Appalachian Moonshine Culture, perhaps it’s just an extension of a society that is becoming more and more focused on "locally made” – either way, Western North Carolina has an abundance of delicious, homemade beverages for you to sample. Any one of the amazing breweries will knock your socks off, and for those of you who simply can’t decide which one to favor, Asheville Brews Cruise offers a brew tour which typically samples 15 – 16 different beverages. Not a fan of beer? We understand! How about sampling the nation’s original craft beverage – that’s right – hard cider. Asheville’s own Noble Cider, has a full list natural, craft brews that can be found at dozens of fantastic local establishments conveniently located in and around Asheville.

4.  Get Cozy

Although there is an inexhaustible list of activities, sometimes the best thing to do on a rainy day is to settle in, get cozy, and read a book. Didn’t bring one? The Battery Park Book Exchange has thousands of books from which to choose in their richly appointed store in the Grove Arcade. Sip a glass of wine or a flute of champagne while you shop – they’re all about spoiling you!

Kids may be less inclined to spend their rainy day in a hushed bookstore. Families traveling to the area are in luck because many Carolina Mornings properties come complete with game rooms for at home enjoyment!

5.  Enjoy it

Ultimately, the rainy Southern day will be exactly what you make of it. If you’re visiting the area, there is no better location than a Carolina Mornings Property for enjoying the view. Sitting quietly on the porch, listening to the soft patter of the rain on the leaves of the trees, watching the waves of raindrops cascade over the mountains and into the valley – these are the moments of beauty in a Southern spring.  From the porch at Mountain Time, the unhindered views of the valley below will leave you breathless in the finest possible sense of the word.
