There's a ton of entertaining events happening on Memorial Day Weekend in and around Asheville, North Carolina - so rest assured at least one of them is right up your alley! Family fun? Green thumb? Outdoor adventure? Pack your bags and kick off summer with one of these awesome options!
1. Mountain Sports Festival
Only in Asheville will folks find a way to combine athletic events with local beer and live music. Carrier Park on the French Broad River is home to a weekend full of sports competitions, including a triathlon, rock climbing, disc golf, Ultimate frisbee, cycling, and the much anticipated dodgeball tournament. The festival, attended annually by over 15,000 people, also features kids activities and outdoor adventure gear exhibitors anxious to demo their wares. Free music is brought to you by top-notch acts like the Josh Phillips Folk Festival and George Porter Jr. & the Running Pardners.
2. White Squirrel Festival
The quiet little mountain town of Brevard, NC explodes every year with this family-oriented festival. Named by the Southeast Tourism Society as one of the Top 20 May Festivals, the White Squirrel Festival features two days of free live music by 16 different acts, a derby kart race, 5K and 10K White Squirrel races, and a downtown parade with wacky costumes and a tribute to US soldiers lost in battle.
3. Biltmore Blooms
From the formal gardens bursting with poppies, snapdragons, and pansies to the Rose Garden featuring over 1,400 blooms, the Biltmore Estate's Festival of Flowers brings colorful delight to all who attend. Carolina Mornings is pleased to offer all guests a complimentary Biltmore Estate ticket, which includes access to not only the expansive gardens, but also the Biltmore House, known as the largest private home in the US. This free ticket is part of the Mountain Discovery Pass, an exclusive Carolina Mornings treat!
4. Kenilworth Art Studio Tour
Over twenty artists in the Kenilworth neighborhood near downtown Asheville will open their studios on Memorial Day Weekend. This free, self-guided tour connects the area's many talented residents. This year's tour features four artist husband-and-wife couples, including Ann and Sandy Batton who collaborate to create fanciful pottery such as the piece shown here. Art enthusiasts will also want to check out Asheville's River Arts District, home to more than 165 artists with working studios.
5. Garden Jubilee Festival
Passionate gardeners and newbies alike will find true delight at this annual downtown Hendersonville festival located just twenty minutes from Asheville. Over 200 vendors will be selling plant starts, including herbs and hard-to-find species, as well as handmade arts and crafts items that help beautify your outdoor entertaining areas. Beginner gardeners should come armed with questions: nurseries and experts will be on hand to offer tips and advice.
