Celebrating the Holidays on the Polar Express
Riding the Polar Express
Many people know the Polar Express to be a very popular and fantastic book written by Chris Van Allsburg that describes a magical train ride on Christmas Eve. Later made into a movie starring Tom Hanks, this timeless and entertaining tale has become a classic Christmas adventure. Now, this amazing holiday story can be experienced in real life via the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad. More than 70,000 passengers rode in 2014 and the event is expected to be just as popular this year. Be sure to schedule your ride soon as this fantastic event will only be going on through January 3rd, 2016.
What to Expect
The Polar Express Ride is a 1.25 hour round trip adventure that departs from Bryson City Depot. The route takes participants over the river and through the woods straight to the North Pole! For the extent of the ride, the motion picture soundtrack will play in the background and warm cocoa and cookies will be served. Most passengers wear their PJ’s (parents included!). Finally, as the train arrives at the North Pole, faces light up as Santa boards the Polar Express and hands each child his and her own very special gift (just like in the story!).
Things to Know
Tickets should be purchased early to get your preferred date and time! Ticket prices vary. Best of all, Smoky Mountain Trains Museum admission is included with every Polar Express ticket. So far we’ve had a very mild winter here in the mountains, but the trail runs no matter the weather so that’s one less thing to worry about. Finally, the last rule of thumb is to arrive at least 30 minutes before departure!
