Asheville Spotlight: River Arts District

One of the best things about Asheville is its vibrancy and emphasis on the arts. Western North Carolina has a strong history based in craft and Asheville takes its role in keeping that tradition alive very seriously. With Spring on its way, we have quite a bit of ogling to look forward to – Art Walks, Gallery Visits, Show Openings – they’re all coming into season and we couldn’t be more delighted. With the winter winding down, all eyes are turned to
RAD Art.
 RAD Art

The River Arts District (RAD) is famous in its own right – the former industrial district of Asheville is now home to 185 artists in 25 buildings. Out of these former warehouses emerge thoughtful and engaging pieces of work – sometimes small, sometimes enormous, sometimes 3D, sometimes on stretched canvas. Rather than being categorized by a theme, the RAD artists stand out as independent, courageous and immensely talented.

Up Close and Personal

Not only are the Artists of Asheville sharing their work in local Downtown Galleries, they often invite visitors in to experience the art as it’s made. Over the weekend of May 9th– 10th, art lovers can look forward to the River Arts District Studio Stroll – an open door invitation to not only see the pieces being produced but to speak to the talented artists about their work, concepts and histories. Explore the magic coming out of the re-purposed factories and warehouses along the French Broad River – it’s a truly memorable experience!

Eat Your Heart Out

The River Arts District is also home to some truly fantastic culinary wizards. White Duck Taco Shop is a local favorite, boasting a rotating seasonal menu and some of the best homemade Sangria around. The Wedge, a well-established local brewery, kicks out some amazing brews and is dog-friendly to boot! And of course, 12 Bones Smokehouse – one of Asheville’s finest BBQ restaurants – makes a bold impression no matter the season. Not only are these eateries some of Asheville’s most prized establishments, they’re conveniently located near the galleries – take a stroll, have a bite, see some art – now that’s a sweet life!
