Asheville and the Great Outdoors

The sun is shining, the birds are singing, and the flowers are blooming. It's time to enjoy the great outdoors. Take advantage of the great outdoor activities - hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, ziplining and rafting - whatever you like (or would like to try), its waiting for you here in Asheville.

There are so many varied and wonderful trails to do some great hiking and mountain biking in Asheville. The Blue Ridge Parkway offers many different access points to hiking trails of various difficulties. Another great option for hiking and biking that people rarely consider is the Biltmore Estate. The grounds offer more than 22 pristine miles of hiking trails. Bike rental and detailed maps of the trails are available at the estate's Bike Barn and at the Outdoor Adventure Center. Another very cool place to check out for hiking and mountain biking is Bent Creek Experimental Forest. It encompasses 6,000 acres and has 44 miles of trails - many of them designated as hiking or biking trails (you will also find several horseback riding trails here).

Staying at Truly  Breathless gives you the wonderful  opportunity to step outside and hit the trails. The trail on the property connects to the Pisgah National Forest trails. For more great hiking ideas, check out
this post which has
 some of our favorite spots.

One of the most exhilarating ways to experience this wonderful landscape is to get in the waters of French Broad River. It is said that the French Broad holds the distinction of being the third oldest river in the world (behind the Nile and the New River). It is even old than the Western North Carolina Mountains where it runs. Jump in and get into a part of history with French Broad Rafting. They offer various trips daily that are geared toward all levels, from calm water trips to IV level rapids. Not only will you take a trip down the river, your guides will teach you the proper safety rules of rafting  as well as a bit of history about the area.

For a truly exciting mountain experience, get your boots on and giddy up to Sandy Bottom Trail Rides. Located less than 40 minutes from downtown Asheville, this secluded ranch in Marshall has horses for any age and ability. They offer various different options including 3-hour and 4-hour rides that include a trip to the Little Pines Gem Mine, the historic 200 year old mine on the property. For those who prefer to take a passenger seat to a saddle, horse-drawn wagon rides are also available.

Another thrilling way to experience these great mountains is to soar through the trees. Thrill seekers and nature enthusiasts alike love ziplining. French Broad Ziplines offers an zipline adventure course is tree-based with ten lines ranging in length from 75-1000 feet long. See some of the most beautiful views of these Western Carolina mountains from an amazing canopy tour. Never ziplined before? Rest assured! French Broad Ziplines will teach you everything you need to know and outfit you in proper gear to ensure your total enjoyment and safety.

Sunrise Knoll is a great 3-bedroom, 4-bath vacation home. It is THE place to stay for outdoor enthusiasts. It is conveniently located close to Sandy Bottoms Trails and to French Broad Rafting and Ziplining. Plus, it's features and amenities give you the opportunity to take in even more outdoor fun. Make memories al fresco on the deck, at the basketball hoop, in the hot tub and around fire pit. In the summer months, the home's in-ground saltwater pool is splashing good fun.
