Long holiday weekends are perfect for quick getaways to the mountains - dash in, celebrate that extra day or two of weekend, and dash out. Naturally, we recommend traveling to the Asheville area because, well, we love it here! Read on for some recommendations from the natives for how to spend the long MLK holiday weekend in our neck of the woods.
Stay in Style
We always say that staying local is the key to enjoying all that our extraordinary area has to offer - and to add to that, why not stay in style? Carolina Mornings has dozens of amazing rentals in and around the Asheville area - each one uniquely beautiful. Larger families will find themselves positively enchanted by Storybrooke Place - a 4 bedroom vacation rental that combines the coziness of an Arts & Crafts bungalow with the elegance of a completely custom interior. The spacious, fully equipped kitchen is perfect for concocting a vacation worthy brunch. The gorgeous fireplace is the perfect spot for congregating after a day of exploring the mountains.
Although it can be quite difficult to bring yourself to leave one of our amazing vacation rentals, there is a vast and beautiful world out there to explore. Western North Carolina has hundreds of miles of hiking trails, awe inspiring waterfalls, a vibrant and colorful local economy, and some of the best food in the country. We always recommend setting aside time for a hike or two (visit our area guides for some recommendations on local hikes), followed by exploring the Downtown area of Asheville and the surrounding small towns. Our galleries are chock full of local, well made art - the perfect keepsakes with which to travel home. Check out both the River Arts District (RAD) and the galleries downtown for the full experience.
Asheville is widely coming to be known as a foodie Mecca of sorts. Our award winning chefs never fail to create sumptuous, adventurous, and perfectly balanced meals with often seasonal ingredients. Our favorite restaurant changes daily, depending on what we’re craving, but we can make a few recommendations that are sure to please. Curate, an award winning Tapas bar located in Downtown Asheville, never fails to impress. The menu is large and ever-rotating so be sure to ask your server about his or her favorites. For something sweet, French Broad Chocolate Lounge continues to be one of the most popular locations in Downtown Asheville. You may have a bit of a wait, but trust us - it is definitely worth it! Try the sipping chocolate (you’ll love it!).
