A Day of Fun in Asheville, NC: Featuring a Downtown Art Walk
Asheville is known for the art that is created by its residents – from ceramics to glass, paintings of various mediums to large scale iron sculptures, the work that is produced here often leaves visitors and art lovers awe struck. For those of you interested in sampling these local creations, we’ve outlined what we consider to be the perfect day for art lovers in Downtown Asheville.
Hit the Snooze
Sometimes, the best way to begin a day of vacation is to hit the snooze and enjoy a little extra sleep! Visitors to the area will appreciate the many Carolina Morning properties situated in and around Asheville, each one as unique and beautiful as the last. Families will love staying in Liberty House – an attractive bungalow built in the American Craftsman style of architecture. Waking up in this charming, sun soaked home will be the perfect start to a day of fun and exploration in our amazing city. Located in a charming North Asheville neighborhood, guests at Liberty House will find themselves in a convenient location to begin the day.
Enjoy a Classic Brunch
Asheville chefs know how to do brunch. Our southern flair lends itself perfectly to a rich late morning/early afternoon meal. With so many options, it can sometimes be overwhelming trying to find the best brunch spot in Downtown Asheville, so let us assure you – just about any restaurant that you choose will leave you feeling full, happy, and primed to start the day. One of our absolute favorite spots for brunch is Over Easy Café, located on Broadway - one of the main streets in Downtown Asheville. Try the breakfast tacos with maple chipotle seitan – they’re to die for!
Sample the Local Wares
We have so many galleries, so many artists, that sometimes art lovers aren't sure where to begin. To get a broad sampling of various area artists, stop in to Kress Emporium. Dozens of booths highlight dozens of artists, each one unique and captivating. And with such a wide variety of art, visitors will find that there is something for every kind of budget. Want to take a piece of Asheville home with you but would rather not spend hundreds of dollars? You will definitely find what you’re looking for in a place such as this.
After touring the wares at Kress, a short stroll down the street and around the corner will lead you the Woolworth Walk – a re-purposed, historic Woolworth store that features the work of dozens of local artists. Here too visitors will find art from all across the spectrum and can leave with a small or large memento of our fantastic small town. Plus, there is an old fashion soda bar located inside the gallery! Enjoy a classic malt or a delicious coffee – you've earned it!
Have a Light Lunch
One of our favorite places to have a light lunch is the Laughing Seed Café. Specializing in Vegan and Vegetarian fare, this restaurant is more than a quick stop for a small lunch – it is a perfect testimonial to how seriously Asheville takes its food. With all the menu items prepared with care and, when possible, local ingredients, Laughing Seed Café stands out from the pack. We just love their Harvest Salad, which is a delicious bed of tender, young arugula that has been topped with roasted beet and butternut squash then sprinkled with goat cheese, pistachios, and dried cranberries and topped with a house-made cranberry chipotle vinaigrette. Is your mouth watering yet?
Pop into a Gallery
To see even more work by Southeastern Artists, head over toBlue Spiral 1 on Biltmore Avenue. Featuring art by artists and object makers in the Southeast, this 3 story gallery will be the perfect end to a day of colors, textures, photographs, and sculpture. With rotating exhibits, the curators at this gallery keep it ever interesting for those looking to sample the works of expert artists. Beginning in May and running through the end of June is an exhibit entitled "Structure” and it features the work of students of the Penland School of Craft. You won’t want to miss this peek into the world of some of the best local creations!
Treat Yourself at Curate
Curate, voted one of the best restaurants in the Southeast, specializes in Spanish Tapas. Though a reservation is always recommended, patrons will find that the exciting and mouthwatering creations will be worth the extra work involved with getting a table. We suggest asking your server for a recommendation as we couldn't possibly choose one thing off of their extensive menu.
