El Oso is located in Pisgah National Forest in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Enjoy a Rustic Mountain Feel, without exactly roughing it!
At El Oso, which means "The Bear," kick off your hiking boots and relax to the sounds of the forest while rocking on the porch and enjoying the fresh mountain air. Pets are always welcome!
During your El Oso vacation, you'll be treated to many memorable activities. Make S'mores in the huge stone fireplace, then drum up some friendly competition with El Oso's plethora of family games, including a full poker set, a professional dartboard, numerous board games, Mario Cart on the Nintendo64, and ping pong and foosball tables. A computer is available for Internet access, and there's a DVD library, cable TV, and a separate TV in the loft. A fully-equipped kitchen has everything you'll need to cook homestyle meals.
Outside, keep an eye out for deer, fox, rabbits, and groundhogs that frequent the woods surrounding El Oso. Spend your days exploring the Blue Ridge Mountains with a hike on the Nature Trail just up the road, on the nearby Appalachian Trail, or to the top of Big Bald Mountain, where you'll find one of the most spectacular views on the East Coast. The kids will love the outdoor adventures and mountain creeks, as well as swimming in the pool and playing on the playground at the “Village.” El Oso offers enough activities to keep everyone busy!
Guests can easily travel into Asheville for shopping, fine dining, arts, and entertainment. Mars Hill, a charming college town, is also a short drive away. Bring your discs because there are tournament quality Disc Golf Courses in both Asheville and Mars Hill.
El Oso provides a rustic, yet very comfortable week in the woods. With all the amenities of home....sorry....you're gonna have a tough time telling your friends you were roughing it! Be sure to book early for the spring and summer seasons! Four-wheel drive is recommended during the winter months due to the steep driveway. This Asheville vacation rental is located in Mars Hill and is approximately 40 minutes to downtown Asheville.

Hiking on Site:
1) 1.3 miles up the mountain (on Wolf Laurel Rd) is the entrance to the well maintained 2 mile Nature Trail. This eventually hooks up with the Appalachain Trail.
2) If you take Wolf Laurel Rd all the way to the top then left on Big Bald Rd, that takes you (on dirt roads) to the highest point (and best views) in the area. The Appalachian Trail also runs right across the top of Big Bald Mountain.

We drove up to Mt. Mitchell, hiked to Crabtree Falls, drove the Blue Ridge Parkway, hiked little trails along the road, saw some deer and wild turkey... Amazing views! "Quiet, relaxing, a little hiking... The whole family played games together, watched movies, and we did a lot of reading and baking! The stables were the best. Chimney Rock Park and the falls were amazing. Asheville and Shindig on the Green was interesting.
