Top 3 Favorite Summer Destinations on the Blue Ridge Parkway

Top 3 Favorite Summer Destinations on the Blue Ridge Parkway

Seeing the Sights
The Blue Ridge Parkway is a beloved area resource and is known nation wide as one of the most beautiful scenic byways on the East Coast! Traveling it in the summer is a must-do for locals and visitors alike as the vast expanses of green, the vibrant flora and fauna, and the breathtaking long range views are an incredible sight to behold. It would be impossible for us to pick our favorite milepost, but in the spirit of introducing newcomers to some of the loveliest destinations, we've put a spotlight on 3 of our absolute favorites.

Milepost 339.5, Crabtree Falls & Meadows:
A moderate 3-mile hike takes you to a stunning 70 foot waterfall. This is a popular picnic spot (for good reason!) - so be sure to pack some snacks and beverages for your moment of bliss at the base of the fall. This milepost is about 45 minutes from Downtown Asheville, but the beauty is worth the drive, the hike, and the sweat! To get there from Asheville, jump on the Parkway and head North for 42 miles.

Milepost 431.4, Richland Balsam Overlook:
Experience the very highest point on the Parkway at this gorgeous overlook. At a towering 6,047 feet, this is a supreme spot to watch the sunset over the distant valleys and share a summer picnic. There is a moderate 1.5 miles loop trail to the summit, making this a very accessible mountain hike. The trail is one of our favorites because it passes through a spruce-fir forest - it's the perfect combination of exercise, aesthetic beauty, and aromatherapy!

Milepost 451.2, Waterrock Knob:
Waterrock Knob is one of the highest peaks along the Blue Ridge Parkway and the views from the parking area are downright breathtaking. Many locals travel to this milepost to watch the sun rise or set over the distant valleys. This stop is very close to the end of the Parkway (about 18 miles) and if you're in the hiking mood, you may want to take advantage of the opportunity to trek the last trail along the Parkway before venturing into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
