The Sounds of Asheville - Music in Western North Carolina

The mountains of Western North Carolina are filled with the sound of music. From the street buskers downtown to the big festivals, melodic sounds fill the air in Asheville. Music is plentiful and varied in every season. No matter what time of year you visit Asheville, you can guarantee that there are always great musical events you can add to your itinerary.

Downtown Sounds Amazing
Downtown is brimming with musical options. During warm weather months,
Friday nights echo to the beat of many different drummers. The Drum Circle in Pritchard Park welcomes everyone to jump in and find the rhythm. Shindig on the Green is a local weekly Bluegrass tradition that happens summer Saturday evenings at Pack Square Park. Bring an instrument (finger snapping and hand-clapping count!) and join in the fun. Another great option for checking out local bluegrass downtown is the Old Time Jazz Session held every Thursday night at Jack of the Wood. If your musical interests lean more toward eclectic genres, both the Orange Peel and the Grey Eagle are superb venues and offer some great live bands.

Electronica Adventure
Often people are surprised to find out that electronica has Asheville roots. Robert Moog
was a pioneer in electronic music. The inventor of the Moog synthesizer made his home in Asheville and Moog Music is still headquartered here. They offer free tours of the factory by appointment. Visitors can watch the musical artisans as they put together these amazing instruments, and can explore their inner electronica skills by trying out every Moog instrument in production.

Held downtown at the end of October, the Mountain Oasis Electronic Music Summit promises big name headliners including Nine Inch Nails, Neutral Milk Hotel, and Bassnectar, as well as many other big name bands. Next year's MoogFest, honoring Robert Moog, is already planned for April - this might be the perfect event to include in your spring trip planning.

Carolina Mornings offers some wonderful options when choosing downtown as your home base for these events. The Starnes House is just two blocks north of downtown in the Historic Montford area and is a beautiful Victorian built in 1898. Offering all the modern conveniences while maintaining its charm, it is a wonderful welcoming home. Also downtown is the ultra-chic Studio Lex, a modern loft located in the center of it all. Lexington Avenue Brewery is just a flight of stairs away and offers a variety of music nearly every night of the week.

The Bold Sounds of Black Mountain
Nearby Black Mountain, NC is small but carries a big sound. White Horse is a great local venue that showcases musicians from the area and beyond. The wildly fun and family-oriented LEAF festival is held in May and October on the former Black Mountain College grounds. Another exciting music venue is the Pisgah Brewery in adjacent Swannanoa. Pisgah Brewery
hosts a variety of bands year-round on their indoor stage in the taproom and in their outdoor venue space.

Bullhead Mountain LodgeWhen planning your stay in and around Black Mountain, some great vacation rentals for you to consider are
Laurel Cove Cabin, Sunset Haven, and Bullhead Mountain Lodge. Laurel Cove Cabin is cozy and welcoming. It is surrounded by gardens, woodlands, and its very own koi pond. Larger accommodations can be found at Sunset Haven. This eco-friendly property sleeps six and sits on eight acres of forest. Both are located in Swannanoa, which is 10 minutes to Black Mountain and about 15 minutes to Asheville. When traveling with a large group, Bullhead Mountain Lodge is the ultimate gathering place. With accommodations for 16 people, this eight bedroom, six bath lodge in Black Mountain has it all - a private pool, hot tub, and a beautiful outdoor pavilion in case you want to strike up the band.
