The Big Crafty: An Asheville Art Expo

The Big Crafty

The Big Crafty returns to Downtown Asheville this year on July 12th! We at Carolina Mornings are  particularly fond of this art festival because it so perfectly exemplifies the personality and vibrancy of our wonderful little city. Dozens of truly remarkable local and visiting artists will be showing their work at the Asheville Art Museum, Pack Place, and Pack Square from 12 noon - 6:00 PM. We highly recommend you stop by, take in, and take home some unique and well made art!

What To Expect

This is a rain or shine event, so you can count on being able to take in the scene no matter the weather! The Big Crafty is a juried show organized by the Asheville Art Museum, so every vendor is chosen through a highly competitive selection process, making this event a high-caliber showing of the best of the best. There will be food, drink, music, and the finest wares so be sure to come with an empty belly! And best of all, admission is completely free! The show seeks to revive the tradition of the community bazaar, so communication is key to this event - the artists will be on site to discuss their craft, their passions, and their hopes and dreams.

This is the 13th time in 7 years that the festival has graced the streets and businesses of Asheville and it’s just gotten better and bigger every time it’s been put on. Featured artists exemplify the traditional craft heritage of the area - the goal, as organizer Brandy Bourne describes it, is to be "a continuing thread of art and craft, and to have a strong cultural role that is not coming from the outside, but is a real outgrowth of what has come before.” In other words, the festival builds upon the magic of the previous years and becomes a kind of reunion of artist and art lovers.

Where to Stay

Whether you’re a vendor traveling to be apart of this phenomenal event or a shopper looking to experience the majesty of over 100 artists congregating together in the coolest city in the country, staying local will be key to the full experience of this event. Carolina Mornings has dozens of vacation rentals available - each one unique and beautiful, much like the art at The Big Crafty! Looking for a taste of country living? Check out Land of Sky - a 3 bedroom refurbished 1940’s farmhouse located in surrounding Asheville. Not only will you fall in love with the horses grazing in the adjacent pasture, but your four legged best friend can be with you the whole time! For those more interested in a home nestled in one of our downtown neighborhoods, Sallie Lee Cottage is the perfect choice. A 2 bedroom home, Sallie Lee is a historically preserved stick-style Victorian believed to have been built in 1883. Also pet friendly, Sallie Lee Cottage will be the perfect home base for those visiting the area but wanting to live like a local.
