Ten Fun Things to Do at the North Carolina Arboretum in Asheville

The North Carolina Arboretum is a must-see destination for anyone visiting the Asheville area. This 434-acre public garden, situated just off of the Blue Ridge Parkway in the Pisgah National Forest, offers adventure and artistic appreciation in all seasons!

1. Gardens Galore 
Explore the Arboretum's 65 acres of cultivated gardens. From the Heritage Garden to the National Native Azalea Repository, there's fauna and flora surprises around every bend! 

2. See Special Exhibits
Delight the senses with art, pottery, and interactive science exhibits. This fall: LEGO Sculptures by New York Artist Sean Kenney!

3. Over 100 Bonsai Trees
Traditional, tropical, and native species of bonsai are included in the Arboretum's celebrated collection. Presented in a specially designed outdoor garden, the miniature trees and plants inspire an appreciation for their striking beauty.

4. Guided Trail Walks
Take a tour with a Blue Ridge Naturalist and learn more about plant and tree identification and natural history, among other topics. Offered for free every Sunday and Tuesday afternoon.

5. Walk through the Quilt Garden
Meticulously cared for colorful flowers make up the floral representation of a traditional quilt pattern. Marvel at the arrangement from a stone paved overlook.

6. Hiking and Biking Trails
A dozen trails ranging from easy to difficult wind through the Arboretum's woods. Bring your dog and relish the opportunity to stretch your legs along the banks of Bent Creek.

7. The Perfect Picnic
Bring a blanket to spread out on the grass and enjoy your lunch surrounded by blooming flowers. Whether your intent is family fun or romantic memories, a picnic on these lovely grounds is sure to be a good time!

8. Check Out Carolina Craft Day
On September 28th, celebrate Southern Appalachian traditions during Carolina Craft Day. Featuring craft demonstrations, juried art and craft vendors, and plant sales.

Participate in a high-tech treasure hunt that highlights the fun of GPS technology. Navigate your way to a geocache and leave your mark. 

10. Educational Spaces for the Kids
One of the main missions of the Arboretum is youth education. The kids will love all of the learning opportunities set up especially for them, from the EcoLab to Discovery Camp to Wee-Naturalist classes.
