Fun for All: The Pisgah Field School
The Pisgah Field School
The communities of Western North Carolina put a lot of emphasis on outdoor adventure - and for good reason! Our corner of the state has some of the best natural resources in the country, not to mention some of the most beautiful sights. The Pisgah Field School is an arm of the Cradle of Forestry in America Interpretive Association (CFAIA) - a non-profit that seeks to help the public better understand the benefits of conservation through fun, interactive activities that promote both education and recreation. In essence, the organization brings the beauty of the mountains to the people. Events are scheduled throughout the summer and fall and each one is as exciting as the next. We’ve outlined a few that we’re particularly interested in, though by no means is this an exhaustive list.
Who doesn’t love scavenger hunts? On July 4th and September 5th this year, the Pisgah Guides will run a hunt from 10:00AM to 12:30PM. This day trip will emphasize the details of the forest - look around to find the secrets, the clues, and the answers to win the hunt! Perfect for groups and families, this event will require moderate hiking (the sights will make up for the sweat). The cost for adults is $25 per person, children under 12 are $8.
The Pisgah Adventure Tour
Better than an amusement park! This half day tour will include a tour of the Cradle of Forestry Historic Site, several stunning waterfalls, a picnic, lots of hiking, and plenty of education. Three upcoming tours span the length of the summer and fall - June 30th, July 7th, and October 23rd. The day lasts from 11:00AM to 4:00PM. Cost per person is $40.00 and includes all the perks of being guided by a passionate professional.
Waterfalls ‘n Wine
Ah - the perfect pairing! This event will guide you to the 6 most sought after and accessible waterfalls in the area, with education and sightseeing along the way. As this is such a popular event, plenty of tours have been scheduled between now and the end of October, with four upcoming July dates - the 2nd, the 16th, the 25th, and the 30th. The event runs from 12:00PM to 4:00PM and wraps up with a private wine tasting at Broad Street Wines in Downtown Brevard. Cost for ages 16 and up is $50.00, 15 and under is just $15.00!
The Yoga Trail
Find your inner peace! The lessons of the forest and the flora and fauna within can provide us with timeless truths for a beautiful life. On this tour, a certified yoga instructor will lead a Flow Yoga Session that will wrap up with a calming stroll through the woods for silent meditation and self reflection. Maximum capacity for this event is 20 students and it is quite popular - the next and last scheduled event of the summer will be held on July 24th, so sign up soon! Cost per person is $35.00 and all attendees must be over 18.
What better way to end one of the above events than to settle in to your home away from home in the mountains? Carolina Mornings has dozens of vacation and cabin rentals in and around the Asheville area, each one unique and beautiful with charms and delights not soon to be forgotten! Eagle’s Landing, a mountain retreat situated at an elevation of 3,700 feet, boasts year-round panoramic views of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains. Complete with a hot tub, a fully equipped kitchen, an outdoor dining area with gas grill, and a satellite TV, Eagle’s Landing is almost a vacation destination in and of itself! Plus, you’ll love how accessible it is to area amenities - nearby Weaverville has all the small town charm you could want, the Blue Ridge Parkway is just five miles away, and area attractions like the Biltmore Estate and the North Carolina Arboretum are easily accessible by nearby Interstate 26.
