Folkmoot: A Celebration of Culture in Waynesville, NC

Folkmoot in Waynesville, NC

The communities within Southern Appalachia pride themselves on being a conglomeration of many different cultures. It’s that blend, that soup pot of traditions that makes us so unique. And one of our favorite celebrations of that amalgamation is Folkmoot – a 10 day event that fosters community, tradition, cultural exchanges, and global relationships. This festival is a hill of fun – locals and visitors alike will not want to miss it!

Read on to have some frequently asked questions answered by the Carolina Mornings Team:

What is it?

Folkmoot is an international folk festival based in Waynesville, NC. The first of many festivals was held in 1984 – the year that also saw North Carolina celebrate its 400th year. The name "folkmoot” is an Old English word meaning "meeting of the people” – quite appropriate for what the festival was to become. Since that first year, Folkmoot has been a meeting place for folk groups representing over 100 countries.

When is it?

The 2015 festival will take place from July 16th – July 26th. Over the course of that week and a half, festival goers will experience a myriad of cultural traditions – each one unique yet connected in special, sometimes unexpected ways.

Why should I go?

Reminding ourselves that the world is a vast and beautiful place is one of those things that we should do more often, but can forget about in the hustle and bustle of our daily lives. Folkmoot exists to remind us that we are members of an enormous global community – and that we should embrace the weird and wonderful aspects of varying cultures.

What kinds of performances should I expect?

Dance troupes from Chili, Ecuador, Estonia, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Philippines, French Canada and Puerto Rico will grace attendees with their talents. The festival will also include performances by the Eastern Band of Cherokee, among many other local Appalachian Folk groups.
