Carolina Mornings Spotlight: Carolina Hemlocks Recreation Area

Carolina Hemlocks Recreation Area
Choosing the mountains of Western North Carolina as your vacation destination is one of the best ways to have your cake and eat it too! We have all the resources to enjoy the more rugged aspects of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and the comfortable, well appointed options for relaxing with your family. One of our favorite places to enjoy all that our area has to offer is the Carolina Hemlocks Recreation Area, located in Burnsville, NC - just an hour's drive from Asheville. This recreation area boasts swimming, fishing, tubing, hiking, and more! Read on for a brief introduction to this amazing area resource.

Where It Is
Carolina Hemlocks is located in the Appalachian District of the Pisgah National Forest and it sits alongside the beautiful South Toe River. Mount Mitchell State Park and the Blue Ridge Parkway are just a short drive away, making it supremely accessible to some of the more famous area draws. Visitors travel from as close as Charlotte or Atlanta (just a few short hours away!) or as far as the other side of the country just to experience the rich, lush landscape of Southern Appalachia. Our temperate rain forest boasts some of the most beautiful sights to be seen in the United States, and we recommend that everyone travel here at least once!

What to Do
Because the Recreation Area sits along the banks of the South Toe River, fishing, tubing, and swimming are some of the most popular activities for visitors. We especially love heading over there in the morning to hike around for a few hours before settling in for a picnic in the shade of the tree canopy. Rhododendrons, Hemlocks, and old, deciduous trees make up the forest and wandering through their boughs is one of the most peaceful activities in which to partake. Anglers can try their hand at catching a trout or a smallmouth bass from the sandy shore of the river while the rest of the group plays frisbee, catch, or just lounges in the sun or shade to read a favorite book. Looking for a home base for a larger group get-together? The area boasts a large group picnic shelter that fits up to 30 people!
