Carolina Mornings Spotlight: Asheville Outdoor Center

Carolina Mornings Spotlight: Asheville Outdoor Center
The summer season in Western North Carolina is a fantastic time to visit. Our mountain culture is so deeply intertwined with outdoor fun and there are dozens of excellent local companies that provide the tools you need to take advantage of our climate, our landscape, and our vast area resources. One such company is the Asheville Outdoor Center, located in Asheville, just off of Interstate 26 West. Read on for a brief introduction to this great Asheville company!

About the Company
Asheville Outdoor Center has been an Asheville staple since 1992. It is a privately owned company with a lot of stake in Mountain Culture, so you can rest easy knowing that it is being operated by folks who know the area and the activities. They're conveniently situated about 10 minutes from the heart of Downtown, the Biltmore Estate, Biltmore Village, and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Asheville Outdoor Center is also a licensed river outfitter and a member of the NC paddlesport association!

What to Do
The AOC offers a plethora of amazing activities for you to choose from. They have canoes, kayaks, paddleboards and rafts for those looking to spend a day on the river. For the land lovers, they offer bicycle rentals and gem mining trips. They also have a lovely riverside park available to be rented for parties, reunions, birthday parties, or just good-ol-fashioned get togethers. We recommend trying to take advantage of all the offerings, if you can. We love renting beach-style cruiser bikes and spending a leisurely morning biking along the French Broad River. As the sun gets higher and the air heats up, we head for the river to paddleboard the afternoon away.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should I wear?
Your clothing choice does depend a bit on what activity you're planning on doing, but in general the AOC recommends "play clothes". During warmer months, shorts and a t-shirt or tank top are wise choices. A bathing suit and sandals make sense if you're heading toward the river to spend the day on the water. When the chillier weather sets in, layers are recommended.  Oh, and no matter the season, we recommend having a change of clothes with you - just in case!

Is it safe?
All AOC staff members are CPR/ first aid certified and the company provides you with all the necessary safety equipment that you would need to have a safe and enjoyable time. Detailed instructions are given and safety videos are shown before you head out on a trip, and while it is your responsibility to follow the rules and make good decisions, AOC does everything in their power to prepare you for the activity.

Are there age requirements?
There are age requirements for some of the activities offered by AOC. Children as young as four years old may participate on the float trips, though they do need to weigh at least 35 pounds.
