Autumn at the NC Arboretum

Autumn at the NC Arboretum

One of the many ways to celebrate the fall season is to head over to the North Carolina Arboretum for a day of outdoor fun! The Arboretum is one of our most treasured area resources - read on for some suggestions on how to enjoy it!

Hike
The Arboretum has over 10 miles of pet friendly hiking trails, ranging from easy to moderate to difficult. The trails are well kept and connect to other popular area attractions like Pisgah National Forest, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and Lake Powhatan.

For an "easy" hike, we recommend trying out Bent Creek Trail - 1.3 miles of foot traffic only, this trail winds along the creek and offers plenty of shade for those hot early Autumn days!

Bike
Visitors from all over the country travel to Western North Carolina to experience biking on our mountain trails! The NC Arboretum is a great place for people of all skill levels, but most particularly for beginners. The trails are wide and well kept, proving themselves as excellent learning courses!

Cyclists looking for an easy going ride over at the Arboretum would do well to check out the Bent Creek Road Trail!  1.3 miles of a wide road connect the Bent Creek Experimental Forest and Lake Powhatan.

Learn
The Arboretum has a fantastic Education Center where families can go to observe animals in realistic, recreated habitats, explore ever changing exhibits, and interact with real scientists. After all, the Arboretum is at its core an educational resource for visitors and locals alike!

What to go on a real treasure hunt? Head to the Arboretum to learn more abut geocaching! They make it easy to head out on your own trek by providing geocaching packets and kid-friendly GPS units.

Where to Stay
Staying local is key to fully enjoying all that Western North Carolina has to offer! Returning to your own home away from home in the mountains at the end of a long day of exploring will make all the difference to your Autumn vacation. For a conveniently located home that boasts craftsman details, a private sauna, and a lower level entertainment area (with Ping-Pong table!), check out Elkhorn Cabin. This 3 bedroom stunner has everything you need to relax, rejuvenate, and create lasting memories.
