Asheville, North Carolina's Shindig on the Green: Enjoy Authentic Southern Musical Traditions

On a handful of Saturdays this summer, Pack Square Park in downtown Asheville, NC will echo with enthusiastic applause for old-time mountain music and dance. Shindig on the Green was voted "#1 Local Outdoor Concert" three years in a row in the Mountain Xpress's annual "Best of WNC" edition. Here's a a few things you might want to know about Shindig on the Green when you're visiting Asheville.

1. Eight Saturdays of celebration mark 2013's Shindig on the Green season: June 29, July 6, 13, & 20, and August 10, 17, 24, & 31.

2. This is an entertainment line-up built of mountain dreams and traditions! Starring the long-standing house band The Stoney Creek Boys, the Shindig features hundreds of performers in dozens of acts, including bluegrass and old-time string bands, clog dancers, ballad singers, and storytellers.

3. Come early when the weather's nice! The park fills up fast - for a prime spot you'll want to arrive late-afternoon for the sundown festivities.

4. Bring your lawn chairs and picnic blankets! Make it a family affair - get comfortable by spreading out on the lawn and packing some snacks.

5. Instruments are welcome. Informal jam sessions around the park invite both new and experienced pickers and percussionists to join in the fun and make a little music!

6. Come hungry. Okie Dokie Smokehouse will be on-site serving up heaping portions of pork! The Hop will also be there to help you cool off with some locally made ice cream.

7. A rare prized "Sams" dulcimer + a turkey quill used by renowned balladeer Virgil Sturgill are on sale for $1,500.00 to benefit the Shindig and the Folk Heritage Committee (they've got the details if you're interested).

8. Run for the Shindig! On June 22 in Carrier Park, a 5K run will benefit this season's events. A great way to stay in shape and support the local bluegrass scene!
