Asheville is the Coolest Town in the US

Downtown AshevilleMatador Network, the world’s largest independent travel media company has named Asheville the coolest town in the US. They based their list of twenty on certain criteria. Matador looked for cities that had a strong do-it-yourself ethic, a vibrant downtown community, close proximity to nature, and cultural diversity. The list also included Laguna Beach, California, Sun Valley, Idaho, Missoula, Montana, and Marfa, Texas, among others.

Those factors put cities on the list but it was what else a city has to offer that would move them up the list. The top reasons that Matador chose Asheville as the coolest city are it’s location, it’s supportive local community, and it’s family-friendly, unpretentious culture.

Location
Asheville is situated in the valley of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Here you are always close to outdoor activities. No matter what time of year, there is always something to get outside and do - Skiing at Wolf Ridge Resort in the winter, hiking Pisgah National Forest in the Spring, cooling off in Sliding Rock, the natural waterslide, and driving along the Blue Ridge Parkway during fall foliage. The Asheville area is the best place to fall in love with the great outdoors.

Truly BreathlessThose wishing to take in the splendor of the Blue Ridge Mountains love our cabin Truly Breathless. The cabin has a hiking trail on the property that leads to the Pisgah National Forest. If relaxing is more your style, sit in the hot tub under the stars and breath the fresh mountain air. With a wonderful southwest motif and stunning views, this 3-bedroom, 2-bath cabin will truly take your breath away.

Local Community
Asheville loves local. While there are many big box stores, we prefer our artist mall at Woolworth Walk and buying our books from Malaprops or Downtown Books. From the local artists in the River Arts District to the farmers who set up shop each week at the City Tailgate Market, you will find exceptional local artisans and craftsmen everywhere. Whatever your interest - food, chocolate, jewelry, clothing, beer, art - all of these things are prepared with love here locally in Asheville.

North Carolina ArboretumFamily-Friendly Culture

There are so many activities for families year around, your kids will tire out long before you can see it all. Whatever your family's interests, you will find something for everyone. The North Carolina Arboretum is a delightful place to explore for all ages. Families that enjoy the water can rent a boat and go fishing at Lake Julian, take the the river and go rafting or tubing, or just cool off at Splashville, the interactive water fountains in Pack Square. Animal lovers will enjoy learning about native animals at the Western Carolina Nature Center. Young music lovers in the family? In the summer, families gather at Pritchard Park for Drum Circle and kids dance at Shindig on the Park.

Here, at Carolina Mornings, we believe family members can also be furry and have four legs. One of the things that makes our city so cool is that Asheville is  an incredibly pet-friendly place as well. Dogs are welcome at most patio dining areas and at most breweries. They are also allowed on the grounds of the Biltmore Estate (which also has a playground for the kids at Antler Village).

Imani's CabinBring your family and stay at one of our fantastic pet-friendly cabins at Majors Estate. Located on 200 amazing acres, the cabins are exquisitely appointed. The estate offers access to the Pigeon River, a tennis court, a basketball court, a barnyard, and a playground. The largest cabin on the property, Imani’s Cabin, sleeps 7 and has amazing views. Additionally, Jaisel’s Cabin and Taj’s Cabin sleep 6 and for a cool couples get away, Courtside is a wonderful option.
