Adventure Seeker Spotlight: Whitewater Rafting

Adventure Seeker Spotlight: Whitewater Rafting
The French Broad River runs through the heart of our cities and towns. It is as much a part of our culture as the mountains and the valleys that stretch across our corner of Western North Carolina. There are many river sports based along the French Broad River, but one of our absolute favorites is whitewater rafting, led by the fine folks over at French Broad Rafting. In fact, we love it so much, we paired up with FBR to offer our guests one complimentary rafting trip to be used during a Carolina Mornings stay! Now that the warm season is fully upon us, we can enjoy this event as often as we want - and trust us, we do enjoy it often! Read on for an introduction to this classic mountain sport.

What to Expect
French Broad Rafting is a dedicated and supremely professional company that knows how to show a patron a good time! On a whitewater trip, you can expect to get very wet, to laugh, to gasp, to work hard, and to see some of the most beautiful sights in these mountains from a totally new perspective. Depending on your preferences, you'll choose either the 5 mile trip, the 9 mile trip, or a calm water float trip. For families with smaller children, we recommend the float trip - it's beautiful, easy going, and a great way to spend an afternoon. For those looking for a bit more excitement, the 9 mile is a great choice. It is essentially the 5 mile rafting trip, plus an additional 4 miles of class IV rapids.

Where to Go
French Broad Rafting is located in the beautiful town of Marshall, NC in Madison County - AKA, the Jewel of the Blue Ridge Mountains! On the day of your trip, you'll arrive thirty minutes early to your designated outpost (which will be indicated when you call to make your reservation). During that thirty minute prep time, your guide will collect car keys (to keep them dry and safe!), and will get you outfitted in the proper safety gear for your trip. At the river, you'll have the introductory safety talk and rafting orientation - this orientation is a great opportunity to ask all of those questions that you've been thinking of since you arrived! On the other end of the trip, at the end-point, members of the French Broad Rafting Team will be waiting to transport you back to the outpost (where you started).

What to Wear
Wearing appropriate clothes for the trip is key to having a fantastic time. Shoes that will not come off in the water are required - so no flip flips or loose slip ons! In the Spring and Fall, we recommend layering. Complimentary wet suits are provided, so if that's your preference, you'll simply want to bring your bathing suit to wear underneath. It is never recommended to wear cotton or jeans, but synthetic materials or wool are great choices. In the summer, swim suits with shorts and a tee shirt or tank top are perfect. Again, steer clear of wearing cotton or denim - they absorb the water and leave you feeling heavy, bogged down, and stiff.

Stay Local
Staying in a Carolina Mornings Vacation Rental will turn your weekend getaway into a vacation to remember! We have dozens of gorgeous homes in and around the Asheville area, each one as unique and beautiful as the next. For those that want it all, Laurel Mountain Retreat - Red Bird is the perfect homebase for your mountain adventures. Located between French Broad Rafting and Asheville, it will offer access to the best of both worlds. You'll fall in love with the private hot tub, the covered front porch, and the convenient yet beautiful location. Best of all, the pet friendly policy means that the whole family can come along - our legged best friends too!
